258 - The Real Work of Dating with a Disability
Dating requires skills — and disability adds complexity. But disability services are built around health, safety, and independence, not romantic fulfillment. Sexuality remains taboo, no structured framework exists for disability-specific dating barriers, and success gets measured by employment or housing, never relationship quality.
Kathy's Story
Kathy O'Connell, a certified rehab counselor with 36 years in the disability field (nearly 30 as a counselor), was born with cerebral palsy. She spent 20 years dating through trial and error with no models or resources. A turning point came on a date when she openly named her disability and what she brought to a relationship — that date became her husband.
The Five Stages of Dating Success
A sequential, skills-based framework:
- Stage 1 – Foundation & Self-Discovery (4–6+ months): Shifts the question from "Will someone accept me?" to "Are we compatible?" Involves values clarity and building a disability-positive identity.
- Stage 2 – Confidence & Resilience (3–4 months): Not about eliminating fear, but building resilience to act authentically despite it — through rejection role-play, social confidence building, and anxiety management.
- Stage 3 – Strategic Planning (2 months): The "nerdy but necessary" logistics — platform accessibility, a three-tier disclosure strategy, safety protocols, dating budgets (including the "accessibility tax"), and accessible venues.
- Stage 4 – Active Implementation (ongoing): Success isn't measured by getting a date — it's measured by authentic self-representation, boundaries, and resilient responses to real experiences.
- Stage 5 – Mastery & Sustainability (lifelong): The shift from "How do I succeed at dating?" to "How do I sustain this — and help others too?"
Key Themes
Sexual ableism — the false belief that people with disabilities aren't worthy of romantic relationships — runs through all of it. The framework isn't linear-rushed; it honors individual pace, addresses shame and trauma, and treats dating skills as transferable to other life areas.
The Curriculum
Kathy's complete Five Stages of Dating Success program — built for support coordinators, therapists, and disability professionals — packages this into modules, milestone checklists, and action libraries.
